Packaging a film is a fancy way of saying you put all the elements together (attaching a director or talent — that is packaging an element).
In the indie space, once there's a director, we go out to talent because having actors on board, especially of a certain level, helps us get to the next step.
Raising money. You need to brutally assess the talent profile of your film — has your director made other movies? Are the actors attached household names or lesser-known? You need to be very honest about what you think you’re going to get. If you think your movie could premiere at Sundance or a similar festival, you're probably looking for a smaller amount of money.
Sending to film financiers. Financiers need to see that the potential sales for the movie could cover their investment. This is why sales estimates from foreign sales agents become very important when you're putting movies together.
Send to studios or streamers
Send to established finance companies that have great reputations in entertainment (e.g. FilmNation, Fifth Season, Black Bear)
Send to smaller indie financiers — these can be found by researching production companies that have produced small, low-budget indie films.
